Honours were even at this year’s Y11 vs Staff Charity Football Match. The Mark Dearlove Memorial Shield event is held annually in memory of Mark, a former pupil who tragically died in a car accident. This year’s event raised money for two charities, one of which was the Great North Air Ambulance in Liam Stafford’s name (a current Year 11 pupil) who had a serious accident earlier in the school year. The other charity to benefit was the Lourdes Fund in memory of Dave Gardner, the father of Year 11 player, Connor Gardner.
Year 11 players raised money with cake sales, selling match tickets, tuck shop at the game, Tartan Day where pupils paid £1 to adorn their uniform with a piece of tartan. Pupils raised nearly £1300 which will be shared between the two charities.
The match was an exciting affair swinging end to end with lots of goalmouth action; the Y11 team took an early lead with a header from Danny Maguire, but this was short-lived as the staff team then stormed into the lead with a headed Mr Mitchinson goal and a contentious penalty expertly converted by Mr Guy. The match then hung in the balance well into the second half before James Havelock converted a rebound from close range after Jordan Allen had hit a deflected shot against the bar. Y11 then quickly scored again with Xavier Bengo having a free header from a corner. The pressure was then piled on by the staff team and after numerous corners and free kicks Mr Miller converted after a goal mouth melee!
On this occasion both teams shared the trophy and the Man of the Match award was presnted to Jordan Allen by Mark’s mum, Mrs Dearlove.
