The Importance of geography

DSCN5425Geography is not only up-to-date and relevant, it is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today.  So many of the world’s current problems boil down to geography, and need the geographers of the future to help us understand them.  Global warming, sustainable food production, natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, the spread of disease, the reasons for migration and the future of energy resources are just some of the great challenges facing the next generation of geographers.  

Choosing geography at school can open the doors to a university degree, either specifically in geography or by combining geography with other A levels to gain a place on a degree programme in another subject. An A Level in geography is recognised for its academic ‘robustness’ and, most importantly, it also helps young people into the world of work.

Key Stage 3

In Geography students investigate a wide range of people, places and environments at different scales around the world. They learn about geographical patterns and processes and how political, economic, social and environmental factors affect current geographical issues.

Assessment of key geographical skills as well as knowledge and understanding is carried out
through end of term tests and extended writing projects based upon the topics being studied.

Homework

To develop students knowledge and understanding of the topics being studied
homework is set on a fortnightly basis throughout the year . All of the work can
be accessed by the students using Google Classroom from the College website.

Key Stage 4

Geography (GCSE)

IMG_8768Studying Geography gives students the opportunity to travel the world via the classroom, learning about both the physical and human environment. They will develop their understanding of how geography impacts on their everyday lives and discover the key opportunities and challenges facing the world.

Assessment

    • Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes

Looking to the future

Many students combine geography successfully with science, arts or humanities subjects allowing for wide-ranging career opportunities. As care and management of the environment becomes an ever more important issue it is interesting to note that a significant number of students have gone on to pursue careers in this field.

 

Learning outside of the classroom

  • 1Field trips are an essential part of Geography and one of the most memorable parts of a student’s experiences of the subject at Trinity. Learning outside of the classroom is a great experience and allows students to apply classroom learning in a real world context and to ‘see for themselves’, applying knowledge and understanding in a practical way.
